Vermont simply doesn’t have enough homes that people can afford at different stages of life. That affects young people trying to stay here, families looking for room to grow, older Vermonters who want to downsize, and employers trying to find workers.

We need more homes of different sizes and types, particularly in places where existing infrastructure can support growth. That means making it easier to build while still giving communities a meaningful role in deciding what development looks like locally.

Affordability has to remain part of the equation. Building more housing matters, but so does making sure working Vermonters can actually afford the homes we create.

We also need to recognize that Vermont’s housing needs are changing. Smaller households can create demand for more homes even when our overall population changes very little. We need a housing system that reflects how Vermonters actually live today.

If we want people to build their lives here, we have to make room for them.
